For passengers, a cruise ship is an escape — a chance to relax, recharge, and enjoy life at sea. On Celebrity Eclipse, launched in 2010 as the third ship in the Solstice Class series, every interior detail was designed to create a sense of elegance and ease. KONE’s extensive marine expertise and innovative vertical transportation solutions played a key role in this vision, turning movement on board into an integral part of the luxury experience.

Designing vertical flow for comfort and performance in a demanding environment

Cruise ship elevators face exceptional demands — round-the-clock operation, peak usage as thousands of guests and their luggage move on and off the vessel, and the need to perform smoothly even in open-sea conditions. Celebrity Cruises wanted solutions that combined reliability and performance with seamless integration into the ship’s striking architecture and advanced technology.

Working closely with architect Scott Butler of Wilson Butler Architects, KONE designed eight panoramic elevators that complemented the ship’s design while creating a sense of theatre — spaces where guests could see and be seen. Through full-scale prototyping and a structured process of testing and refinement, KONE brought the architect’s vision to life with precision and craftsmanship. The project, delivered in collaboration with Meyer Werft shipyard, further strengthened KONE’s long-standing leadership in the cruise ship segment.

Optimized people flow with unique signalization and reduced wait times

KONE and the architect jointly developed an innovative signalization solution for landing call stations, using illuminated glass lights to guide passengers to the correct elevator, significantly decreasing wait times.
